   - Émile-Jean Lépissier (1826-1874) :

Former assistant astronomer to Urbain Le Verrier at the Observatory of Paris, Émile-Jean is the first of the family to leave for China in 1866, as French teacher at the Tóng Wén Guan (同文館) in Peking (Běijīng – 北京). In 1871, he becomes the editor and manager of a newspaper, the "Progress" in Shànghǎi (上海) before becoming professor of astronomy at the University of Tokyo from 1872 to 1874. Émile-Jean returns to France, very ill, in June 1874 and dies in Paris in October 1874 at the age of 48.

 - Laurent Lépissier (1850-1923) :

Son of Émile-Jean, Laurent arrives in China in 1867 with his mother Maria and sister Juliette. In 1869, he joines the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs, where he will spend the rest of his career, finishing it as a Commissioner. He is posted in Shànghǎi (上海), Canton (Guǎngzhōu – 广州), Hankéou (Hànkǒu – 汉口), Chinkiang (Zhèjiang – 浙江), et Níngbō (宁波). He quits in 1912 and returns to France, where he dies in 1923.

   - Charles Lépissier (1882-1974):

Son of Laurent et grandson of Émile-Jean, Charles is born in Canton (Guǎngzhōu – 广州) in 1882 and stays in China until 1888. He returns to China in 1906 where he spends the remainder of his career as a diplomat. He finishes his career in Tientsin (Tiānjīn – 天津) as general consul in 1939. You will find in a sub-tag the book 'La famille Li'  by Jacqueline Scipion, born Lépissier, retracing the lives of Émile-Jean, Laurent and Charles Lépissier in China.

You will also find below an e-book entitled "Le Petit Journal et la Chine". This magnificent work, by Pierre Palpant, covers events in China during the colonial period from 1890 to 1913 and from 1921 to 1931.
The book comes from the website www.chineancienne.fr, which I highly recommend to anyone interested in China at the time.
